DEFINITION: A "Found poem" consists of previously printed words (in a newspaper or book, on the back of a bottle or box, etc), which have been artfully arranged to LOOK like a poem.
EXAMPLE: Dylan pulled words off a Doublemint gum package, and arranged them in TRIPLET STANZAs:

To savor
This package
Is part of
A multi-pack

POETRY DU JOUR:
Definition: Another type of "found poem," poetry du jour uses headlines from one day's newspaper to make a statement .
Directions: Collect several (10-15) headlines....see what theme they might have in common, then arrange the headlines on a piece of construction paper. CREATE A TITLE for your poem that helps readers see the common theme. Put the date under the title as a subtitle. Finally, type your poem to turn in.
EXAMPLE:
"FOOD FOR THOUGHT"
May 16, 2006
Iowa grocery stores
battle for Ankeny consumers. (headline 1)
Ohhhhhhhh,
tasty treats for everyone! (headline 2--split up)
All about steak, (headline 3)
soothing style. (headline 4)
Brandenburg gives a taste of Germany. (headline 5)
Records: Daughter could have been (headline 6)
....fed.
SUGGESTIONS:
*you might see a theme developing as you collect headlines
*an individual headline might suggest a theme!
*use a saying or quote to unify your headlines:
"To be or not to be"
"All the world's a stage"
"Do unto others as..."
*use the most unusual or stongest headline as the last line for a PUNCH!!!
WED 4-8
*Turn in Poem du Jour poem
*"Poetry in Song lyrics"

Rhyme, stanza, internal rhyme, alliteration, ETC> ETC>
SUGGESTION: old traditional songs and hymns like "America the Beautiful" have lots of rhymes!!!
THURS 4-9
"EPITAPHs"--the poetry of gravestones.
Many old gravestones have engraved on them stories about how the person buried underneath had died. Throughout the centuries, people have told stories about how people lived and died. Some tombstones have poetry about a person's life or death. Many of these poems follow these rules:
1)How the person died.
She was not smart,
She was not fair,
But hearts with grief for her are swellin'
And empty stands her little chair,
She died from eating watermelon.
2)A rhymed story
Some have children, some have none;
Here lies the mother of 21.
3)A play on the name
To Mrs. Oldfield, actress:
This we must own in justice to her shade,
Tis the first bad exit Oldfield ever made.
4) A single line of tribute
They did the best they could
5) An acrostic of the name
ANN SHORT
A m short O lord on praising thee,
N othing I can do is right;
N eedy and naked, poor I be,
S hort Lord, I am of sight.
H ow short I am of love and grace.
O f everything I'm short.
R enew me, then I'll follow peace
T hrough good and bad report.

*"5-senses poem"--due Monday
For those who were at Student Senate...here's a detailed HOW TO WRITE A 5-SENSES POEM, and an example from last year's classes:
A "5-Senses Poem" describes an abstract term using all 5 senses.
An "abstract word" is a word like LOVE, MISERY, PEACE--a word you can define, but not hold in your hand (like you could a DOG or A LEAF or a PENCIL, etc.)
EXAMPLE:
(Abstract word) is (color)
It sounds like_________________
It tastes like___________________
It smells like____________________
It looks like_____________________
It makes me feel like______________________
Here is a 5-senses poem as done by a 6th grader:
Anger is red.
It sounds like crying.
It tastes like blood
It smells like dust.
It looks like ugliness.
It makes me feel like fighting.
See how the writer used only 1 word to describe each sense?
You're in 7th grade. You can use adjectives and phrases to describe each sense. Here's what my 2nd hour class wrote TOGETHER last year as they collaborated on this poem. They tried to think of multiple items to really help the reader understand the abstract word they chose:
"SNOBBERY" by 2nd Hour, 2008
Snobbery is hot pink (with leopard spots).
It sounds like coins jingling and cash crackling.
It tastes like caviar, expensive wine, and truffles.
It smells like Channel, Dior, and White Diamonds perfumes.
It looks like sequin gowns, expensive jewelry, and designer handbags.
It makes me feel like a Weasley at a Malfoy party.
I love the last line, especially!
I also like the alliteration in "cash crackling." Can't you just feel those crisp new bills?
Now, for those romantics out there, here is a poem created by last year's 3rd hour class:
"LOVE" by 3rd Hour, 2008
Love is lipstick pink.
It sounds like wedding bells chiming as a couple murmurs vows of love.
It tastes like a box of Valentine's Day chocolates.
It smells like a rose-scented candle by a perfumed bubble bath.
It looks like a couple kissing on a beach in the sunset.
It makes me feel like tingly all over.
Now YOU try a 5-senses poem! Be prepared to read it in class on Monday!
MON 3-22
*"Telling Tales"--we listened to "Goldilocks" and "Little Red RH"--then spent the rest of the hour REWRITING a folk or fairy tale from A DIFFERENT CHARACTER'S POINT OF VIEW. Try telling the tale of the 3 PIGS from THE WOLF's point of view....or Goldilock's tale from the BABY BEAR's point of view. You choose the folk/fairy tale. Just make the retelling COMPLETE. Remember to INDENT each time you start a new paragraph or a new character speaks. Make sure to include some dialog...when we hear characters speak, we learn something of their personalities based on their attitude, their word choice, their way of talking. Make your main character a 'character'!!!
TUES 3-24
Students stapled a clean sheet of paper to their story retelling, then exchanged and read papers all hour, making comments on the clean sheet. THE RULE: Only positive and specific comments could be made. No "nice job" or "I liked your story"...SPECIFIC, like "I liked the part where Baby Bear tackled Goldilocks," or "I liked the phrase you wrote: 'havoc-creating human' ." 5-8 papers were read and commented on each class.
WED 3-25
"Welter Wed Writing": Today we SPRING BREAK BLOG, and glue on artifacts from our spring break experiences...travel brochures, a postcard, a photograph, a band-aid, a movie ticket, a picture of a basketball...whatever YOU did, find SOMETHING that represents your days off and glue it on and write about it!.
