Extracurricular Ensembles
Signups for extracurricular vocal groups will take place the
week of September 14. Students who would like to further develop
their singing skills are encouraged to signup for these groups.
Students from all three grades are combined together in these
groups. Rehearsals for extracurricular groups will begin after
September 22 . Students should listen to announcements for further
updates.
All extracurricular ensembles perform at the scheduled
December and May concerts, for our feeder elementaries tour,
for the school Variety Show in February, as well as for various
community and school events.
Students may participate and are encouraged to
participate in both sports and music. Coaches and directors work
together to make both work.
Mixed Swing Choir (auditioned group of 7th, 8th, and 9th graders)
will practice on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from
7:00-8:00 A.M. Practices will begin the week of September 28.
Women’s Choir (open to any female choir member in the 7th, 8th, or
9th grades) will practice on Wednesday mornings from
7:00-8:00 A.M. and also during the first 10 minutes of lunch
shifts on most Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Practices will
begin on September 24.
Men’s Choir (open to any male choir member in the 7th, 8th, and 9th
grades) will meet during the last 10 minutes of lunch shifts four to
five times a week. Practices will begin on September 24.
Small Group Opportunities
Students selected for the Opus State Junior High Honor
Choirs may be asked to perform Opus literature at the December
concert depending on the numbers and makeup of our voice selection
to these choirs. Additional groups will also be formed to accomodate
the needs and interests of students wishing to perform in the annual
school Variety Show.
Activity Attendance Policy
Students attending classes during the school day will be
expected to attend extracurricular practices that day unless
personally excused by the director. Students who may not be able
to sing on a particular day are expected to listen, follow along in
the music, and participate in choreography activities.
Concert Dress
Concerts are formal public events that present the very best
of students in the music program. Therefore, it is important that
students look “professional”. Inappropriate dress will cause you to
lose concert points and you may be asked to not perform.
Any student who has difficulty obtaining the specified dress
should speak to Mrs. Koltookian at least two weeks prior to the
concert so that appropriate clothing can be located.
Mixed Swing Choir/Women’s Choir/Men’s Choir
Students in extracurricular groups will observe the same
guidelines as outlined below for the Eighth and Ninth Grade
Choirs and BOCH. For the Variety Show, students will be given
specific guidelines to follow for costumes. These guidelines will be
announced 3-4 weeks prior to the show. The directors will send
home costume sheets with students and/or post a costume list on
the school website.
Eighth/Ninth Grade Choir Students and BOCH
All girls involved in the Eighth and Ninth Grade Choirs and
BOCH are required to wear dresses or skirts/blouses. Dresses or
blouses should not be low cut. Straps must be at least 1 inch wide.
Halter dresses, halter blouses, and leggings are unacceptable.
Dresses or skirts should be no more than three inches above the knee.
Girls should wear closed toed shoes for concert performances.
Clothing color shall be one of personal preference.
All Eighth and Ninth Grade Choir boys as well as boys in
BOCH should plan on wearing shirts/ties and dress
pants/khakis for their performances. Dark dress shoes are
recommended. Shirt color shall be one of personal preference.
Co-Curricular Activities Policy
Reprinted From The Holmes Student Handbook, p.37.
Co-curricular activities are an important part of our total
school program. Students are encouraged to participate in one or
more activities during the school year. Watch and listen for
announcements about the various activities as the year progresses.
Since many times more than one activity is scheduled at the same
time, some students may have to select which activity to
participate in during certain parts of the school year. If a student
chooses to participate in the dramatic arts production and another
extra-curricular program at the same time, students will be
encouraged to participate in a “non-lead or subordinate”
performance role for that production. Exceptions may be allowed
with mutual agreement by activities sponsors. Students shall be
responsible to communicate their involvement in more than one
activity to their sponsors at the beginning of their activity season
realizing that dual involvement may affect their
playing/performance time as determined by their sponsors.
Curricular activities shall take a priority over extra-
curricular activities, and school programs shall always take a
priority over outside school programs if a conflict exists.
Students are not to drop out of one activity to begin another
during the same calendar season. It is always best to
complete what you begin! Exceptions to these guidelines will be
granted only with mutual consent of activity sponsors.
