Parent Letter
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Often times, parents and guardians have questions concerning when their child has homework to do and also, if, their child can use a calculator on their homework. I thought it would be easiest to write you this note so you would know what to expect.
Homework:
Your child can expect to have an outside of class homework assignment every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. These homework assignments "match up" with the problems the students and I have practiced that day, together in class. Your child should have these class problems written down in their notes so they can refer back to them when doing their homework. With a few exceptions, the students are always expected to "show their work".
Calculator:
I am requiring that each of my students bring a calculator (along with a pencil, a highlighter, their math fold, and their planner) to math class every day. We will be spending lots of time this year on problem solving. Calculators come in handy when solving real life problems as these problems often involve using large numbers and the answer can be a bit "messy" at times.
An emphasis will be placed on when the students should choose to use a calculator. Some problems are best solved mentally (in your head), some are solved best by using pencil and paper and some by using a calculator. As the school year progresses, the students will get lots of practice in deciding which method to use when solving a problem.
Most homes probably already have a calculator that a student can bring to school. A basic calculator that can add, subtract, multiply and divide would be fine. I will be engraving the student's names on their calculators. This will minimize the number of calculators that are misplaced or stolen.
