Welcome to seventh grade World Studies! Together we will explore ancient history, literature, geography and culture. World Studies is an introduction to some of history's greatest civilizations - Sumeria, Egypt, Greece and Rome. Students are expected to come to class each day prepared to learn and with an open mind. All assignments, tests and projects should be recorded in the student planner. Late work may be turned in for credit but will not be accepted following the closing of the grading (term / semester) period. |

All assignments, worksheets and journals are contained within the World Studies Passport given to all students the first day of class. These worksheets should NOT be removed from the workbook as the intent is to allow students greater success in managing and maintaining consistency in their work. In the case their workbook is lost, students will be given copies of the assignments to be kept in their Green World Studies folders. Please note that assignments are not listed chronologically, but rather as they appear in the student workbook. Assignments that have been collected and graded are highlighted in gray. |
In our first unit we will explore the history and culture of the ancient Mesopotamians, originators of the earliest known civilization. Together we explore Sumerian city-states, ziggurats, the Epic of Gilgamesh and the rise of empires under Sargon the First and Hammurabi. All material covered in class can be found in Chapter 3 of The Human Heritage - A World History textbook. |

Our second unit will focus on the civilization of ancient Egypt, and its three periods of history - The Old Kingdom, The Middle Kingdom and the New Kingdom. We will explore the lives of the great pharaohs Rameses the Great, Amenhotep IV, Tutankhamen and Cleopatra. In addition, Egyptian art, architecture and mythology will be explored. All material covered in class is available throughout Chapter 4 of Human Heritage - A World History textbook. |

We will begin our study of the ancient Greeks with an overview of the Minoans and Mycenaeans. We will focus on the Trojan War as described by Homer and explore its foundations in archaeology and history. Material for this unit is available in Chapter 9 of Human Heritage - A World History. Next we will travel to Classical Greece and learn about the rise of the city-states - Athens and Sparta. We will exlplore Classical Greek culture, history and the Great Persian Wars. Material for this unit can be found in Chapter 10. Our focus on Chapter 11 will include Greek mythology and we will learn about Zeus, Hades, Hercules, Theseus and Jason and the Argonauts. In addition, we will
explore the Greek Olympic games. Our tour of Ancient Greece will conclude with Chapter 12 - The Hellenistic Period which details the rise of Macedonia under Philip II and the conquest of the known world by Alexander the Great. |

Our final unit covers Chapters 13, 14 and 15 of Human Heritage - A World History. This final unit explores the rise of the Roman Republic and history of the Roman Empire. We will explore the Punic Wars, Julius Caesar, gladiators and the barbarian invasions. Roman history, politics, archaeology and economics are all covered in detail in this unit. |

ECHOES After-School Program (Every Child Has the Opportunity to Excel and Succeed) |
The ECHOES After-School Program is a free program available to all students attending Peet Junior High School. Our mission is "To Promote a Positive and Safe Environment for the Empowerment of Youth, the Encouragement of Academic Success, and the Collaboration of Peers, Adults and community." ECHOES is a time for finding help with homework, making new friends, exploring new interests and just having fun. ECHOES will begin on Monday, September 20 and resume after Winter Break on Tuesday, January 11 (students should report to the library after school) and will follow this weekly schedule (Note that ECHOES will conclude each Wednesday at 4:15 PM): |

Attendance in the ECHOES After-School Program is voluntary, and as such, students and parents are free to decide for themselves how often and how long to attend. Most participants attend all four nights a week and stay for both hours. Others come once or twice a week, and still others stay only for homework help. ECHOES is also available to students before or after specific sport seasons. Transportation home is also available for those students needing a bus ride home and who reside within Cedar Falls city/district limits. Contact the ECHOES Site Director for more information. There will be NO ECHOES the following days:
